Spruce up your summer bulletin board with this super cute flip flop idea that was featured in a classroom at McKinley Early Childhood Center. What a fun way to kick off summer! And better yet - there is a craft to help get your kiddos involved in decorating!

Flip Flop Craft

Have your kiddos help you create the flip flops for your beach display! You'll need:

  • White paper
  • Paint
  • Yarn

Make a pair of footprints for each child using assorted color paint. Then, once the paint has dried, cut out the footprints and attach a piece of yarn to make the print look like a flip flop (attach each end of yarn to one side of the foot and then bring the middle toward the top and attach). Easy peasy!

Flip Flop into Summer Bulletin Board

  • Background: Light blue bulletin board paper (sky); Dark blue (water); Tan (sand). You could also just leave the bottom portion of the board exposed and allow the cork to represent the sand (as shown above).
  • Title: "Flip Flop into Summer"
  • Border: A border is not necessary, but you could always add a cute summer-themed trimmer.
  • Decoration: 1) Umbrella - Create an umbrella using orange bulletin board paper for the top and brown for the stand. 2) Beach ball - Use red, white and yellow construction paper to create the ball. You could easily find a beach ball clip art online for guidance! 3) Sun - The sun is created using yellow and orange bulletin board paper. Attach a yellow quarter circle to the upper right corner of the board. Then attach strips of orange around the sun and roll them up toward the sun to create a cute 3-D effect. 4) Birds - The birds are drawn using a thick permanent black marker. 5) The Beach - attach your kiddos cute flip flop creations! You could also add a few beach accents (think shovels and buckets, crabs, sea shells, etc), and perhaps even a friendly shark or a few fishys for the ocean. Be creative. :-)
