If you're looking for a cute activity to add to your insect unit this Spring or Summer, check out this idea featured by Jenn at Finally in First. It's based on the ever popular children's book by Eric Carle - The Grouchy Ladybug - and it is super cute!

The Grouchy Ladybug Craftivity

Before you begin this activity, you'll need to snap a head shot of each of your kiddos making a 'grouchy' face. These will be used when you put your ladybugs together!

Get together as a class and read the grouchy ladybug. Then provide each of your students with a precut and lined speech bubble. Ask them to write a short sentence or paragraph about something that makes them grouchy. If you're running short on time, you could use speech bubble accents like these that are ready to go!

To create the ladybugs, provide a red body for each student along with 6 black legs and 2 antennae. Glue the pieces together and complete by adding the pictures you took ahead of time. For the spots you could provide precut black circles, or you could allow your kiddos to use black paint to create the dots with their thumbs (we vote for the cute paint option). And that's all there is to it - your very own classroom of grouchy ladybugs! Super cute!

When the ladybugs and writing assignments are complete, display them on a classroom board or in a classroom window with a cute heading! This picture is a bit hard to see because of the glare...but you get the idea.
