Simple DIY Review Game Your Students Will Love!

Need a fun review game to test your kiddos' grasp of syllibification? Doris Young, third grade teacher and creator of Third Grade Thinkers, used a 'Snakes and Ladders' game she found at her local Dollar Tree and, with a few tweaks, invented a unique way to build this important reading/spelling skill!

Here's the gist...

Write or print words onto blank index cards, noting the number of syllables contained in the word on the opposite side of the card. [NOTE: Doris suggests using current vocabulary words found in other your other areas of study so that your students will get double review!] To play the game, student are invited to draw a card and read the word. Next, as they reread the word, have them clap the syllables. After saying the number of syllables aloud to the other players, the player can then check the back of the card to see if they got the answer right. If correct, the player can move that number of spaces on the board - i.e. 2 syllables = 2 spaces. If the answer is incorrect, the player does not move and it becomes the next player's turn.

Fun, right!? What's great about this review game is that it can be tailored to fit any learning goal!
