Crafting the Mask

Start by cutting out the center of the paper plate, being sure to leave the full rim of the plate intact. Younger children will certainly need help with this part! If you're working with older crafters, use your discretion.

To create Abe Lincoln:

  • Provide your kiddos with a small dish of black craft paint and a piece of sponge. Invite them to 'sponge paint' half of the plate's rim to create Lincoln's beard.
  • While the paint is drying, use scissors to cut a top hat from black construction paper. Younger crafters might benefit from a template that they can trace and cut! Glue the hat to the top of the paper plate, opposite the dried sponge painted 'beard'.

To create George Washington:

  • Cut a tricorn hat from blue construction paper. Again, younger crafters might benefit from a template that they can trace and cut! Use yellow yarn to add a strip of detailing to the top of the hat, then glue the cutout to the top of the paper plate.
  • Underneath the hat, along the sides of the paper plate, glue cotton balls to create Washington's 'hair'.

To finish off the masks, tape a craft stick to the bottom of the plate to create a 'handle'.
