"Falling Into Area" Interactive Math Bulletin Board Idea

Fall High School Interactive Math Bulletin Board Idea

Perfect for the fall season, this interactive math bulletin board created by Kutztown University's Missy Ebling and targeted toward high school geometry students not only offers a fun change of pace if you're looking for a unique lesson on area, but, with its colorful and festive design, it also provides inspiration for other fall themed interactive bulletin boards - those targeting different age groups and skills!

Falling Into Area

  • Background: Black bulletin board paper.
  • Title: "Falling Into Area"
  • Border: Missy created her own border using red, orange, yellow, and brown construction paper and a leaf shaped paper punch. Create your own trimmer or decorate the board with a purchased border in a complimentary color or fall pattern.
  • Decoration: 1) The Math Problems. Missy created 16 different problems, arranging them on the board and then hiding them beneath fall themed cutouts created from construction paper - i.e. pumpkins and candy corn. The fall elements were then numbered, corresponding to the problems found beneath them as well as the place on the answer sheet where students were invited to write the solutions. To complete the exercise, students removed the fall elements (attached to the board with Velcro strips), solved the area problems found beneath the cutout, and recorded their answers on the appropriate answer line on their worksheet. 2) The Leaves. Any blank space on the board was decorated with the leaf cutouts left over from creating the border. Create your own leaf cutouts from construction paper - drawing the shapes freehand or finding a template online - or simply purchase accents.
