Christmas Writing Activity and Kindergarten Lesson Plan

The holiday season offers a wonderful opportunity to build community in the classroom. With this in mind, as you're wrapping up your winter units, you might consider incorporating this adorable stocking activity from Susan over at Thank God It's First Grade! Not only will it help your kinders with their writing skills, it also will provide them with a chance to remind their friends/classmates that they're appreciated and a special part of the class!

The premise? Everyone likes to receive mail, gifts, and words of affirmation, so why not combine these three things? In the time leading up to Christmas break, students are invited to create and hang stockings in the hallway and then, during their free time, encouraged to write messages of appreciation to fellow students and secretly "stuff" the stockings of their classmates. When students finally get to empty their stockings  before break, they'll be excited to read all of the special notes left for them by their friends!

The best part about this activity is that Susan provides the stocking templates and stocking stuffer note paper for free! Be sure to head over to Thank God It's First Grade for the details!
