Putting Overused Words To Rest! - Halloween Writing Bulletin Board

Halloween is right around the corner and, if you haven't made any plans for classroom decor, we're excited to be able to feature some of the great bulletin board ideas that were submitted to our Halloween contest last year! Perhaps you'll be inspired by these colorful themed boards...

For young writers with a limited vocabulary, it can be easy to get into a vocabulary "rut" - using the same words and expressions over and over again. We love this display created by elementary teacher, Michele Nelson, that helps students put these overused words 'to rest', infusing their writing with new and inspired vocabulary!

Putting Overused Words To Rest!

  • Background: Black bulletin board paper.
  • Title: "Putting Overused Words To Rest!"
  • Border: Layer several sparkle trimmers in 'Halloween colors' or select a Halloween themed bulletin board border.
  • Decoration: Cut tombstone shapes from gray construction paper. At the top of each cutout, print a word commonly overused in your students' writing and, underneath, print alternatives they might consider using instead. Arrange the cutouts in orderly lines on the bulletin board, mimicking a graveyard, and add a yellow moon cutout to the top.
