Veteran's Day is Friday, November 11th - and to recognize the men and women who have fought to keep our country free, we thought a bit of patriotic classroom decor was in order. Check out this fabulous American flag mural from Kathy Barbro of Art Projects for Kids! You kiddos will love creating a piece for the bulletin board and we love the idea of allowing students to use their favorite art medium {pastels, markers, colored pencils, crayons, collage, paint, etc} in order to create an eclectic and artsy finished product.

American Flag Mural

Kathy actually sells the template for the mural at her site which includes 32-pages for your kiddos to color. If you don't wish to purchase the template, here's how we'd tackle the project.

  • Measure and cut pieces of white background paper to fit your bulletin board.
  • Find a clip art image of the American flag online, using your classroom projector system to enlarge and trace the image onto the pieces of white bulletin board paper.
  • Based on the number of students in your class, measure and create a grid on the paper.
  • Use scissors to cut the paper/flag image apart, scripting a small number on the back of each piece so that you know how to put the mural back together.
  • Provide each student with a piece of the mural and get decorating!
Add a patriotic border to the display and you'll have a beautiful, patriotic tribute for Veteran's Day!
