Haunted House + Five Senses

After reading various Halloween stories about haunted houses, Michelle had her kiddos think about what it might be like to visit a haunted house and describe their 'experience' using their five senses. As she prompted them - i.e. "What would you see in a haunted house?", What would you hear in a haunted house?", etc. - her students brainstormed together and completed a super cute anchor chart. In addition to tapping into their senses, Michelle also invited her kiddos to think about how they might feel in a haunted house.

After writing down all their thoughts, students 'constructed' their own haunted house using black construction paper and crayons, and wrote about visiting a haunted house.

The Ghost's Dinner

In Jacques Duquennoy's Halloween tale The Ghost's Dinner, Henry the Ghost hosts a dinner party at which the ghost guests turn the colors of the foods they eat! Pulling from this theme, Michelle and her students brainstormed a list of foods that they thought ghosts might like to eat, then they each chose a food and wrote about it - describing and illustrating what the ghost looked like after eating the food.
