Words Have Power! - Black History Month Lesson & Bulletin Board

Black History Month Collage Project and Bulletin Board Idea

Words have the power to change our actions, our thinking, and even entire countries! Next month, as you and your students explore the many influential African-American men and women who have left their mark on history, consider looking not only at their character and contributions, but at their words and how, by speaking up, they shaped the course of history!

Collage Project

A quote collage offers a great way to help your students connect with Black History Month. After developing a list of important historical figures, assign individual students or pairs of students the task of researching one person from the list and creating a collage of their learning - working to include several quotes from the researched figure that have left a lasting impact.

The colorful collages - that include not only quotes, but pictures and symbols as well - are sure to make a powerful display! For visual impact, we suggest having students decorate a piece of white paper using various art mediums (paper, watercolors, markers, three-dimensional elements, etc.), then mounting the collages onto black paper.
