Next stop on our quest for great Seuss-inspired centers was Getting Messy With Ms. Jessi! She featured the traditional oobleck mixture as well as corn syrup paint fish bowls (crowd favorites!), but she also featured some fabulously unique activities that we know your kiddos will have a blast with!

Cat in the Hat Play Dough Mats {pictured above}

Check out this awesome fine motor activity inspired by The Cat in the Hat! It's simple really - print and laminate activity mats with hat shapes on them, then invite you students to use red play dough to roll out and create stripes! We love it and we know that preschoolers love any excuse to play with play dough! [NOTE: You might consider adding a counting component - scripting or printing a different numeral at the top of each hat and inviting students to create the appropriate number of stripes.]

Rhyming with Green Eggs & Ham

Dr. Seuss inspires a lot of rhyming activities. Jessica used green eggs and ham as her theme, creating egg and ham cutouts and attaching pictures of rhyming pairs to them. To play the game, she invited her students to match each ham cutout to it's rhyming egg cutout! We'll pull from our trusty bag of tricks for some game options...

  • Place the cutouts face down on a flat surface and invite your students to test their memory/matching skill with a game of concentration
  • Have students use the cards to play a game of 'Go Fish!'
  • Mix the cutouts up in a paper bag, passing a piece to each student, then on your count invite student to race to find their match. Keep track of how long it takes for each student to pair up, then do the activity again and try to beat your time!
