We found these fantastic activity mats at Homeschool Creations, a blog created by homeschooler, Jolanthe Erb, and had to pass them along! Fantastic for early readers, Jolanthe provides a variety of themed vocabulary cards featuring both the word and a corresponding image, which students use to...

  • Read. Even if students have never seen the word, they can use their knowledge of the alphabet, beginning letter sounds, and visual clues to figure it out!
  • Build. Reinforcing the concept that letters are the building blocks of words, students practice letter recognition and spelling as they sort through the letter tiles to replicate the vocabulary word on their mat.
  • Write. Students strengthen letter recognition, as well as practice proper pencil grip and letter formation with a bit of printing practice.

We love that you don't have to waste a lot of paper creating an individual mat for each new vocabulary word. Simply print the colorful mats onto card stock, laminate, and provide students with dry erase markers that wipe off so that they can use them again and again!
