Finger Paint Inspired By Fall

While finger painting is a wonderful sensory experience in itself, kick it up a notch by adding seasonal scents to the mix! Here are a few ideas from the creator of the blog Almost Unschoolers.

How To Make Homemade Finger Paint
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 4 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 cups water

Mix all the ingredients together and cook over medium heat until mixture starts to thicken. Stir constantly.

Separate cooled mixture into several shallow containers. Add several drops of food coloring or liquid water color paint to create various colors. Almost Unschoolers suggests experimenting with fall tones like red, orange, green, yellow, and brown. Lastly, stir a different seasonal scent into each dish. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Cinnamon
  • Apple cider mix
  • Ginger
  • Pumpkin pie spice
  • Almond extract
  • Caramel flavor extract
  • Orange spice tea (brewed)

Allow your students to be inspired by the fall colors and smells. Suggest that they paint their favorite fall memory, a colorful fall tree, a pumpkin patch, a guardian scarecrow, or other seasonal themed picture!
