Cereal Necklaces and Bracelets

Kim, contributing writer for No Time For Flash Cards, offers a twist on the traditional candy necklaces and bracelets found in sweets shops.

Supplies You'll Need
- Colored loop cereals (Fruit Loops, Fruit Cheerios, etc.)
- Pipe cleaner (chenille stems)
- Egg carton

To begin, give each of your students a handful of cereal and an empty egg carton. Ask them to sort the cereal by color into the sections of the carton. Getting them in the spirit of the craft, practice patterning with them. For example, instruct them to pull out two yellows and follow it with a pink, blue, then green piece, in that order. If they've been able to follow those instructions, ask them to repeat the pattern three times, incorporating numeracy into the mix as well!

After you've practice these important concepts, let them try their hand an their own patterns and hone their fine motor skills as they string the cereal onto their pipe cleaners. When they're done, encourage them to twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together to form a band. "An educational and healthier twist to the bracelet from your past!"
