Parent-Teacher Communication

While you know that communicating effectively with your students’ parents is important, you may be at a loss as to how to successfully do this. Here are a few tips on how to improve your system of communication.

Be Available

You know the demands that are placed on your time and the schedule you’d like to keep, so decide from the very beginning what time or times you’d like to make available to parents. If you can manage it, come to class a few minutes early or leave a bit late to give parents time to talk with you about their child’s progress and share their comments and concerns. Additionally, decide what is the best way to contact you for extended conferences. However you decide to make yourself available to parents, make sure you clearly communicate it to them at the beginning of the school year. Send Home A Newsletter

While some parents may wish to talk with you directly about a specific concern or question, many just want to know what is going on in the classroom. A classroom newsletter is a great way to keep parents up-to-date on units of study, due dates, and other school news. You might choose to send home a physical copy of the newsletter or take advantage of the technology available to you by emailing parents, posting news onto a classroom website, or creating a blog specifically for classroom happenings.
